Massive Attack: Barack Obama Won’t Win US Presidential Race
27.05.2008

massive attackMassive Attack duo Grant and D have revealed they’re backing Barack Obama for US President but don’t hold out much hope of him actually winning.

The pair believe the choice of the next President has already been made and that it won’t be the Democratic candidate taking up the role.

Grant told the Guardian: “There’s no way the people with real power will let a black man run for President.”

He added that he believes Republican candidate John McCain will win, adding: “The Democratic race is a side-show.”

Massive Attack are currently curating the Meltdown Festival on London’s Southbank.

Fat Joe Laughs Off Black-Eye Photos After Rumble With 50 Cent Ally Papoose
04.03.2008

Radio disses, Photoshop handiwork and in-person fist-swinging — it’s been a long weekend in the Fat Joe vs. 50 Cent saga.
50 played host on New York radio station Power 105.1 on Thursday and Friday and took time to play some music from Joe — his most bitter hip-hop rival not named Ja Rule or the Game. The thing is, he talked over the record while insulting Joe. Papoose was on-air with 50 during one of the tirades.

Fat Joe Mp3On Friday in North Carolina, a show promoter who clearly is not in the know booked Joe and Pap for the same show. Both MCs, and their accompanying parties, came to blows. Other than that, the story is murky. Some reports say Fat Joe and his large entourage thumped Papoose and his folks down. Other reports say Pap handled Joe.

“What happens in the streets stays in the streets,” Pap told MTV News on Monday (March 3). “It was definitely an altercation. I stood tall. Yes, I invited [Joe] for a fair [one-on-one fight], he refused. Yes, I put my hands on him. That’s all I’m saying.”

Pap said a falling-out between Fat Joe and Pap’s mentor DJ Kay Slay is at the heart of his problems with Joe.

“It goes back to the same thing,” he said. “If you having problems with any of my people, you have a problem with me. I’m a loyal dude. Don’t come at me sideways. I’m from Brooklyn. I consider myself to be the most hated MC. A lot of people don’t wanna see me come up because of fear of losing their position. You can do your homework — I just keep coming with consistency.”

Papoose has also had recent run-ins with underground artist Max B (”You disrespect Kay Slay, you disrespecting Papoose,” Pap sad of his problems with Jim Jones’ protégé) and Uncle Murda.

“I deal with pure talent,” Pap began to describe of all his hip-hop beefs. I don’t come to the industry to try and glorify [violence]. I never had to dis nobody to get ahead. When those things came at me, I always reacted to them. I’m a counter-puncher.”

If you believe the pictures of Fat Joe that have been floating around the Web the past couple of days, Papoose is the second coming of Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago and the Soda Popinski from “Mike Tyson’s Punchout” rolled into one. Photos show Joe sporting two black eyes, a bandage and stitches. A blog post from 50 Cent’s Web site was sent out via e-mail saying Pap had beaten the stuffing out of Joe during their fight.

It’s all great comedy, if you ask Fat Joe himself. The photo was clearly digitally enhanced, and the Bronx MC told MTV News that the pic was taken last year while he was at a Knicks game. The real photo has indeed surfaced, showing Joey Crack with no scars.

“If I did get black eyes, why would I go to the Knicks game with black eyes?” said Joe, who performed Friday and has made a gaggle of personal appearances over the past few days. “C’mon, my n—a. I’m always OK.”

On Monday night, Joe shot some video of himself without a scratch. In the clip, he’s rapping, dancing and smiling. Again, he addressed the Papoose conflict, singling out 50 Cent.

“You in the Neverland Ranch over there in the house over there in Connecticut,” he said of 50, blaming him personally for the doctored photos. “Can’t come out your f—ing house playing with this Internet sh–.”

Papoose, on the other hand, said he admires the G-Unit ringleader.

“I got a lot of respect for 50,” Pap said. “If you don’t like 50 Cent, you might just be a hater. You might be mad at yourself. This is a dude that came form the bottom, the gutter. At one time, the industry was so closed off, nobody could get in. 50 was the dude that opened the door and broke through. He went to the top.”

Papoose just released his new mixtape, Build or Destroy, while Joe is touring the country promoting the release of his new LP, The Elephant in the Room, which drops March 11.

“Call Me Irresponsible” by Michael Buble
30.12.2007

Though the shades of Frank Sinatra and Peter Allen still combat for his soul, in his newly compact disk “Call Me Irresponsible” Michael Buble has ultimately found his own sound and personality. For those who doubt that his channeling Harry Connick Jr. channeling Frank Sinatra schtick is done, jump to his rendition of the Frank Sinatra signature song “That’s Life” and listen to his natural vocal amid the combination of both gospel chorus and big music band.

Looking to other sources of inspiration has led Buble to Billy Paul for “Me And Mrs. Jones” which is done in a more matter-of-fact style than the hand-wringing original; to Jack Jones for the title cut “Call Me Irresponsible” which is more laid back than the original despite the big band arrangement; to Eric Clapton whose “Wonderful Tonight” becomes a lovable Latin love-song with assistance from the great Ivan Lins; and to Willie Nelson whose “Always On My Mind” is a lovely song which gets the well-favored voice it deserves. A wide variety of sources and styles that Michael masters and makes his own.

Two polished adamants that cementum the new identity are “Everything” in which all previous acts upon are absent and it is Michael Buble emerging as his own man and the tender and laid back “I’m Your Man.”

Extra mention must attend the arrangements which swing when they need to and modulate for the tender moments such as “Lost.” The upbeat arrangements of “It Had Better Be Tonight” (which can only be identified as big band Italian salsa) and “Comin’ Home Baby” (with it’s backing vocals from Boyz II Men) are just magnificent.

A must for fans and a step towards world dominance by this Canadian superhero, this is a wonderful leap forward for an creative person who in the past has been weighed down by his influences. But as he warns us all with the compact disk opener, “The Best Is Yet To Come.”

New talent - Paul Potts - One Chance
29.12.2007

Paul Potts One ChanceFirst heard of Paul Potts when I was given a You Tube link. I am completely unfamiliar with this type of music. I thought I was losing my mind when chills danced up my spine and tears came to my eyes as he sang. It was only after reading online that I realized Paul’s voice has the same effect on many people.

The CD came today…I have no idea what he is saying, who else has sang the most of the songs….I just know is voice is breathtakingly beautiful. I am amazed that I bought anything having to do with opera…and that I did is a testament to Paul.

And in response to something he said in one of his videos…Yes, Paul, you are someone. Someone magnificent!

Alisia Keys - As I Am. Isn’t as good as her first 2 CDs, but it should still be in your CD collection.
29.12.2007

alisia keysa as i amAlicia Keys is best when she is on the keyboards doing her thing. Her lack of vocal depth and upper range will keep her as a mid-range diva for the remainder of her career. I know what I am talking about because I have heard all the best there is on this earth. Living (Jill Scott), dead (Carmen Mcrae) and old (Dionne Warwick/Nancy Wilson)! Musically, the CD shines. The girl with the video friendly looks really is a musician more so than vocalist. She is really straining at times. So badly that I have to advance to the next track. My favorite song is track 10, “I Need You”. So retro, so truly dead on soulful. Love it. I only wish this rest of the CD was like track 10. Number 7, “Wreckless Love” is the only other bright spot on this mix mash of music.

“Noel” by Josh Groban
29.12.2007

First, let me say that I am a total Josh Groban fanatic and when he is on tour I follow him throughout the country because I love him that much. For me everything Josh Groban records is stunning, and “Noel” is nearly there. Josh’s voice is perfection, and the song arrangement logical and pleasing. I enjoyed “Silent Night”,”Petite Papa Noel” and “Panis Angelicus”. His version of “Ave Maria” was good, but not thrilling as I had hoped it would be.

My personal disappointment regarding this CD centers around the utterly unpleasant, shrieking gospel singers; Faith Hill’s coarse voiced and out of synch duet; and most of all I disliked the inclusion of various soldiers and kids yakking it up on “I’ll be Home for Christmas”. IMO it will instantly date this CD once the Iraq war ends, if ever! Speaking strictly for myself I wish that the production would have been free of this sort of bombast.

Next, although I love David Foster’s work on Josh’s other CDs, particularly “Awake“, on this album the overblown, mega arrangements are just overwhelming, specifically on “O Come All Ye Faithful” in contrast with the intro music on “Silent Night” which was superbly “spatial”, clear and sparse and created a sense of standing in quiet reverence while looking at a starry night. It was entrancing until the mega arrangement came in and blew away the moment. I cannot give this CD a 5 star rating although I will always give Josh Groban a Gazillion Stars Plus for the exquisite quality of his voice. He towers as a GIANT over other popular singers in the current music market. Every concert that I have attended was sold out and a total lovefest for Josh. That tells it’s own story of how much he is revered worldwide.
